Help for British Nationals
Welcome to the Help for British Nationals page. The Consular Section of the British High Commission in Colombo provides many services for British Citizens including issuing British passports, birth and death certificates and offering assistance when things go wrong.
We offer comprehensive travel advice for those considering a visit to Sri Lanka and run a registration programme for those who will be in Sri Lanka for more than one month. If a British Citizen becomes ill, dies, gets arrested or is a victim of a serious crime we are there to offer advice and assistance.
We can provide support to people outside the UK who are:
• British nationals (whether or not they normally live in the UK);
• in certain limited circumstances, British nationals with another nationality (dual nationals); and
• European Union nationals whose country does not have a local diplomatic or consular office, in circumstances where we have agreed to help their nationals.
We cannot provide this support to other countries' nationals, even if they may have been lawfully living in the UK.
We cannot usually provide assistance to British / Sri Lankan dual nationals in Sri Lanka.
Commonwealth citizens without representation in Sri Lanka should contact the Sri Lankan authorities. Most Commonwealth countries have representation in India, thus a Commonwealth citizen should also contact their mission there.
