Humanitarian assistance
The British Government does not have a bilateral aid programme for Sri Lanka currently. In March 2006, the Department for International Development (DFID) closed its operations in country.
However, the DFID provides humanitarian assistance to UN and international relief agencies working in Sri Lanka to help address urgent humanitarian issues. Between June 2007 and April 2009 a total of £ 7.5 million was provided to the ICRC, OCHA and the UNDP for emergency relief work. On 17 May 2009, DFID Secretary Douglas Alexander announced another £ 5 million in humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka .
